I enjoy the Black Crab and the White Crab and from what Billy< Goat > and Elvis Key Tell me that Lubbers is one of the last places localy to get the Crabs when they are in Season but that is slowly being destroyed by all the Wild Pigs on the Cay, Can any one elaborate on just how bad it has gotten and is there a way to rid the island of the pigs so that the Crabs don't become extinct on Lubbers,,,, Just wondering because i Love eating those big Biters and prefer them over any other type of Crab... Inquiring minds want to Know All the best Papanasty

Do you think killing the pigs would go over with the second homeowners on Lubbers? There is no other way.

Papa, you are right on. The Lubbers crabs are the best. I too miss a good steamed crab with hot johnny cake and butter.
The introduction of hogs on Lubbers is a relatively new thing. A few of the HT boys thought it would be a good thing to have a fresh supply of pork close to HT, and not have to hunt the entire mainland of Abaco. They set up automatic corn feeders, built a shooting stand, etc. The hogs multiplied quite a bit and became a problem to some of the homeowners and their gardens. Perhaps it is time to weed them all out, not only for the sake of the gardens, but also to save the crabs on Lubbers. Next time there is a fundraiser in HT they could serve fresh wild pork. |

Here in the US people pay big money to do a hog hunt. $350 is one of the cheapest that I have seen for a pig hunt. Could be one way to get the numbers down, as well as bring in some money. You could charge for a licenses, A permit, a guide, and a pig. As well the people will have to sleep somewhere, and eat food, could even charge to butcher the pig. There is a half dozen jobs...And it would help save the crabs. Going Crabbing is one of my favorite things that I get to Do when Im home in the late Spring, early Summer. I have some of my fondest memories in abaco up to Cross Harbour, and the road to Cherokee.
